Throughout your journey in Hogwarts Legacy, you will frequently come across a plethora of new items to add to your collection. These items offer advantages both in terms of offense and defense during combat. Although swapping out your gear for higher-level equipment can give you a boost in stats, there is a way to further enhance their performance. The game introduces upgrading gear relatively early on, however, you must make some progress before gaining access to the system. To help you out, here’s a quick guide on how to upgrade your gear in Hogwarts Legacy.
You need material from beasts

Shortly after attending your first Beasts class in the fall and finishing all the available story quests, Professor Weasley will notify you via owl that something new is available in the Room of Requirement. This will trigger the story quest “The Elf, The Nab-Sack, and The Loom,” which is given by Deek, the house-elf that lives in the Room of Requirement. Throughout the quest, you will receive a tutorial on how to capture beasts in the wild and care for them while they reside in the Room of Requirement
The quest involves collecting a Puffskien, Jobberknoll, and a Mooncalf. These creatures will provide you with the necessary materials to upgrade the first tier of your gear. For more information on how to capture beasts and where to locate them, you can refer to our beast capturing guide. After completing this quest, Deek will grant you a loom, which can be used to upgrade your equipment.
To gather materials from the beasts, you can collect them every 25-30 minutes, provided that they have been petted and fed. To save time, you can visit Tomes and Scrolls in Hogsmeade and purchase a beast feeder. This will enable your beasts to feed themselves, freeing up a spell slot and saving time.
Upgrading equipment

The amount and combination of beast materials required for each equipment upgrade will differ based on various factors. The gear’s rarity has a significant influence on this, and low rarity gear cannot be upgraded at all. Additionally, the gear type also plays a role. If the gear focuses on defense, upgrading it will result in an increase in offense statistics and vice versa. You can upgrade each piece of gear up to three times, but doing so necessitates a broad range of materials from some of the game’s rarest beasts.
You can also add traits to your equipment or replace an existing one with a new trait. This requires materials, but none of them are rare. The gear’s rarity determines the quality of the trait that can be added, with the best traits being reserved for legendary gear.
If you’re seeking materials without the need to find a specific beast, Brood and Peck in Hogsmeade sells almost every material in the game. However, the items can be costly, and you can only purchase one of each before needing to wait for the store to restock.
