Mortal Kombat 12’s official unveiling has been teased by Ed Boon for some time, and according to his most recent hint, it might happen this week. For those who are unaware, Ed Boon is one of the Mortal Kombat series’ original creators and has recently gained notoriety for his witty social media posts.

Mortal Kombat 12 is coming this year, that much is rather definite. Back in February, David Zaslav, CEO and President of Warner Bros Discovery, casually mentioned during a WB earnings call that the upcoming installment of the renowned fighting game series is expected to be released before the end of 2023. After the news spread, Ed Boon cynically made an effort to deflect attention from this unimpressive announcement.
Leaks from Twitter
He has published numerous further tweets about Mortal Kombat 12’s reveal in the months before then. He has already returned to Twitter, writing, “THIS WEEK SHOULD BE FUN,” which appears to be confirmation that the game will eventually be released at some point this week, possibly during a live stream event.
The tweet in question was typed out in code in a way that made the letter L look stylised. In the comments below the tweet, there has been much speculation on why Boon chose to design the message in this way. Some have theorised that it is actually not an L, but rather the hands of a clock pointing to 3 o’clock. With a teaser video that included a ticking clock released last week, Mortal Kombat 12’s marketing has already made use of the clock face motif.
The way the clock hands moved past 11 and completely over 12 and then stopped on 1 in that clock face teaser also suggested that the future game might be a reboot of the Mortal Kombat series. A few new leaks that appear to support the Mortal Kombat reboot idea have also surfaced.
Hopefully, this week will see the formal announcement, which will either confirm or debunk the reboot theory for good. It’s possible that a gameplay clip will be unveiled during Sony’s PlayStation Showcase stream, which is also expected to happen before the end of the month, in order to determine whether the new game is a sequel or a precursor.
The development of Mortal Kombat 12 is presently ongoing.
