Ghostwriter, a new AI scriptwriting tool from Ubisoft, is intended to assist game writers in creating better dialogue for NPCs.

In a blog post on Tuesday, Ubisoft stated that Ghostwriter, an application developed by the company’s R&D division, La Forge, “isn’t replacing the video game writer.” Ubisoft claims that the opposite is the case. The best lines, or barks, for NPCs, may now be created more quickly by game writers.
Ghostwriter creates rough draughts of barks and allows authors to expand on them to fit the story of the game better. An R&D scientist from La Forge Montreal named Ben Swanson said that he developed Ghostwriter to address the problem of writing barks that would be prompted by particular circumstances, particularly when there is a throng full of NPCs.
“Ghostwriter enables scriptwriters to select and polish the samples created, rather than writing first draught versions themselves,” he stated.
Swanson used Ghostwriter to show bark trees that appear when an NPC character faces a particular issue, such as speeding or hunger, at GDC. For either situation, the software creates lines. The writer then chooses the best line and blends it with their own input to better fit in with the game’s narrative structure.
Can AI actually create video games?
Barks are some of the most frequent lines of dialogue a player will hear in video games, despite being brief and even monotonous; writing them is a crucial task for game producers. (And occasionally they become famous!) These NPC lines may number in the hundreds or thousands in a video game. On Tuesday, Ubisoft unveiled a tool that it hopes will help its authors create barks more quickly. Ghostwriter is a programme that Ubisoft described as an “in-house AI tool” for creating “initial versions of barks.” Tuesday’s GDC 2023 lecture was given by Ben Swanson, the inventor of Ghostwriter and an R&D scientist at Ubisoft La Forge, and discussed how the business uses it.

Major developments in using AI
While developers discuss the effects of tools like ChatGPT, interest in AI tools has grown. Ubisoft’s Ghostwriter tool is one of many AI programmes created specifically for the video game industry to speed up the hard work that goes into composing basic dialogue or cleaning up environmental elements.
A number of Assassin’s Creed games are presently in production by Ubisoft, and Ghostwriter will undoubtedly be employed to speed up that process as much as possible.
